I owe a lot to the people at the Arizona Republic for the skills they taught me as a journalist, because it was the first time I had been published by a news outlet. In my breaking news internship, I did not always get to cover sports, like I so badly desired, but reported on a lot of incredibly interesting stories.
From the Republic, I first got to see my name on a byline in a well-distributed newspaper, and learned the skills required to get stories published. These skills included accuracy, speed, and an ability to find what the "meat" of a story is.
